~ Jim Mather tours RITCHIE’s Tayside plant ~Jim Mather, the Scottish Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, visited RITCHIE’s Tayside plant in Forfar in August to tour the facility. Mather’s trip is the latest in a string of high profile visits to RITCHIE’s plant, following visits from Crawford Gillies, the Chairman of Scottish Enterprise, in May this year and John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, in June 2008.
Mather arrived at 1.00pm on August 12, met with members of RITCHIE’s management team and then took a brief tour of RITCHIE’s plant. The facilities on site include the company’s engineering office, production and manufacturing facility and galvanising plant. Highlights of the works include RITCHIE’s lean manufacturing system, its advanced robotic welding set up and the most recently built section of the plant, which was opened in early 2008. Mather was accompanied by a trio of ministerial aides and, from Angus Council, Neil Prentice, senior service manager, and Councillor David May, the convener of the Infrastructure Services Committee.
RITCHIE provides innovative handling, storage and security solutions for the offshore, industrial gas and chemical, agricultural, defence, glass, distribution and utility sectors. The business was established over a century ago and today employs over 120 people, supplying businesses across the globe.
“I think the success of this visit and those that have preceded it demonstrate the progress RITCHIE has made in recent times,” explained Scott Downie, the company’s industrial sales manager. “I also believe they reflect the importance of manufacturing, and the oil and gas industry, to the overall Scottish economy – something which in my mind can’t be understated.”
